Pros and cons
Good things
- The highest rate among small savings schemes. 8.2% right now.
- Government-backed. As safe as it gets in India.
- Regular income. Paid every quarter, straight into your savings account.
- Tax help (old regime). The deposit counts towards the ₹1.5 lakh deduction, and seniors can deduct up to ₹50,000 of interest a year.
- Can be extended. In blocks of 3 years at the end of the term.
Things to watch
- Interest is taxable. At your slab rate.
- ₹30 lakh cap. Per person, across all your SCSS accounts.
- Early exit costs. Close in the first year and the interest is taken back; after that, 1.5% (second year) or 1% of the deposit.
- The income doesn't grow. Payments stay the same while prices rise.
