How the NSC rate has changed
NSC pays 7.7% today, unchanged since April 2023. Since it began in May 1989, it has ranged from 6.8% (2020–2022) to 12% (1989–1998).
- The rate on the day you invest stays fixed for your whole term. Later changes, up or down, don't affect money you've already put in.
- Rates were higher in the 1980s and 1990s, when prices were also rising faster. What counts is how far the rate stays ahead of inflation (5.54% now).

Good to know
- Interest is added to the certificate every year and paid at the end. It's taxable each year at your slab rate.
- Under the old regime, the amount you invest — and each year's added interest except the last — counts towards the ₹1.5 lakh deduction.
- Your money is locked for 5 years, except in rare cases such as the holder's death.
