Atal Pension Yojana, explained simply

Atal Pension Yojana (APY) is a government pension scheme for people who don't pay income tax. You pay a small fixed amount every month until 60, and from then on you get a guaranteed pension of ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 a month for life.

Checked on 15 Oct 2026 against the APY scheme details and NPS Trust's APY FAQs.

In one minute

Who can join
Indian citizens aged 18 to 40 with a savings account, who aren't and never have been income-tax payers.
What it pays
₹1,000 to ₹5,000 a month from 60, guaranteed by the Government. Then your spouse gets the same, and your nominee gets ₹1.7 to ₹8.5 lakh.
What it costs
From ₹42 a month (joining at 18, ₹1,000 pension) to ₹1,454 a month (joining at 40, ₹5,000 pension).
How long
You pay until you turn 60.

How it works, with real numbers

Join at 25 for a ₹5,000 pension and you pay ₹376 a month for 35 years: ₹1,57,920 in all. From 60 you get ₹5,000 a month, and after you and your spouse, ₹8.50 L goes to your nominee.

If the pension is paid until 80, that works out to about 7.9% a year on what you paid. But the pension stays the same while prices rise: at 5.54% inflation, ₹5,000 in 35 years will buy what about ₹757 buys today.

Pros and cons

Good things

  • Guaranteed. The Government guarantees the pension.
  • Small, fixed payments. From under ₹50 a month if you join young.
  • Covers your spouse. Your spouse gets the same pension, then your nominee gets the corpus.
  • Automatic. Taken from your bank account every month.

Things to watch

  • Not for income-tax payers. Since October 2022.
  • The pension doesn't grow. ₹5,000 decades from now will buy much less than today.
  • Locked until 60. Leave early and you get back what you paid plus what it earned, not the pension.
  • Late payments cost extra. ₹1 a month for every ₹100 overdue.

Is it right for you?

A good fit if you…

  • don't pay income tax and want a guaranteed pension
  • work in a job without a pension or PF

Not a good fit if you…

  • pay income tax: NPS is the option for you
  • want your savings to keep up with prices

Mistakes to avoid

  • Letting the balance run short. Keep enough in your account on the due date to avoid late charges.
  • Picking too small a pension. ₹1,000 a month will buy very little in 30 years; choose the most you can afford, and raise it later if you can.

How to start

  1. Go to the bank or post office where you have a savings account, or use its net banking or app.
  2. Fill in the APY form with your Aadhaar, mobile number, spouse and nominee details.
  3. Choose your pension amount; the monthly payment is set by your age.
  4. Keep enough money in the account on the due date each month.
